Barley Studio was founded by Keith Barley FMGP ACR in 1973 and has been at the forefront of developing techniques for the preservation of ancient glass since then. Our aim is to achieve and maintain the highest standards of artistry and craftsmanship in both the conservation of historic stained glass and the creation of new work by our award-winning designer Helen Whittaker. Examples of our work can be seen in prestigious buildings across the country, including Ely and Durham Cathedrals, Beverley and Southwell Minsters, Hampton Court Palace, Merton and New Colleges, Oxford, Blickling Hall, Longleat House and the RAF Club in London.
Keith Barley is an Institute of Conservation (ICON) Accredited Conservator, Fellow of the British Society of Master Glass Painters (BSMGP), conservation adviser to the UK Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA), member of the ICOMOS CVMA Board, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, and Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. Keith is Master Glazier for Ely Cathedral and has acted as consultant to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston and the Cathedral of Sienna in Italy. He has made many contributions to literature relating to the study and conservation of stained glass and has given many lectures and talks throughout the UK.
Barley Studio are the only stained glass conservators to have been awarded the prestigious Jerwood Foundation National Award for Conservation; this award was made in 1998 for their outstanding work on the unique and world-famous late medieval glazing scheme at St. Mary's Church, Fairford, Gloucestershire. The highly experienced and skilled team are currently engaged in conserving and protecting the remarkable collection of 16th-century Flemish glass installed in nine large windows in the Lady Chapel of Lichfield Cathedral.
