Michael Stokes

Michael Stokes is an ecclesiastical stained glass designer/maker. He also undertakes architectural and residential commissions.

Michael graduated in 1982 with a B.A. Honours Degree in Fine Art from The University of Central Lancashire and studied Stained Glass at Preston College and Beaconsfield. In 1985, he started his stained glass business in Nottinghamshire. In 1986, he undertook his first ecclesiastical commission and soon became totally absorbed with church work. Since then, he has designed and fabricated over 100 new ecclesiastical commissions, including 13 Chancel East windows. Specializing in commemorative and memorial windows, each commission is individually created for its specific architectural setting.

In 2006, he studied the ‘Chemistry for Conservators’ Course and also attended an 8-week full time Internship at Canterbury Cathedral Studios. He was a winner of the Ashton Hill Award in 2006, and in early 2007 gained a 10-week work placement at The York Glaziers Trust, gaining further conservation training.

Michael is Diocesan recommended and has carried out numerous restoration/conservation projects. He has worked for local authorities, The Churches Conservation Trust and The Friends of Friendless Churches. He collaborates closely with Architects.

“I enjoy designing in a contemporary/figurative/semi-abstract style, incorporating blends of traditional compositional elements with a fresh sense of modernism. I primarily use English Antique Glass and provide a good amount of painted detail. Enamels and stain are also applied, if required.”

He is an Associate Member of The British Society of Master Glass Painters, a CSCS Heritage Skills Glazier Cardholder and is currently working towards PACR Accreditation.
