Holy Well Glass

Holy Well Glass specialises in the conservation and restoration of stained glass.

We carry out works to many of the great cathedrals, churches and country houses in the U.K and beyond.

Director Steve Clare is National Adviser for stained glass to the National Trust, consultant to St. George’s Chapel Windsor Castle, and to King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. He is also a member of the Court of Assistants of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, and Trustee of The Glazier’s Trust- the charitable arm of the Company.
Steve is also an external assessor for the PACR/Icon scheme for professional accreditation, and for the Icon CTQ (conservation technician qualification), as well as an external assessor for AABC (The register of architects accredited in buildings conservation).

The company was founded with a determination to establish a centre of excellence which allows carefully chosen and gifted conservators to flourish in a civilised unhurried atmosphere. We are committed to quality in-house training and have a very active research brief.

In the conservation/restoration field we work in collaboration with English Heritage, the National Trust and with private clients. The company have a particular specialism in small-scale metal work involved in architectural glazing schemes, such as the small-scale manufacturer of original glazing bars or lead castings.

We have extensive experience in the restoration of enamelled glass from the 16th to the 19th centuries; notably we have recently conserved the fascinating east chancel window by Francis Eginton at St. Alkmund, Shrewsbury.

The team have great experience in the conservation of early mediaeval glass, often involving the conservation of original leadwork.

Both working directors are accredited ACR (Accredited conservator/restorer) within the ICON/PACR scheme;the highest conservation qualification in the U.K.

We are the only stained glass studio in the U.K. with 2 working conservators accredited at this level.
